Naming ceremony of the USV Challenger

Naming ceremony of the USV Challenger

Last Saturday, 8th March, at the GONDAN shipyard, we held the naming ceremony for the C506 Uncrewed Surface Vessel, for USV A/S, a Norwegian company formed by three leading offshore companies: DeepOcean, Solstad and Østensjø Rederi.

At the event, we had the pleasure of being joined by representatives of the companies involved in the project, such as Lars Peders Solstad (CEO) of Solstad Offshore, Kristian Helland Vea (CEO) of Østensjø Rederi and Carl Johan Amudsen of the USV A/S management committee. We also have the presence of Sveinung Zahl and Steven Alezander Bolstad, directors of operations and technology respectively of Remota A/S. In this case the godmother has been Johanne Halvorsen, Deputy MD Europe at DeepOcean.

This vessel, designed by the Norwegian company Salt Ship Design to carry out underwater maintenance and inspection missions, is 24 metres long and 7.5 metres wide and is equipped with a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system with 500 kWh batteries. The vessel has a system of sensors, cameras and antennas on board that will allow it to carry out underwater inspection work such as the launch and recovery of underwater vehicles (WROV) capable of diving to a depth of 2000 metres completely remotely. The Norwegian company Remota A/S, specialised in remote operations and semi-autonomous maritime services for the offshore and marine industries, will provide the onshore Remote Operations Centre (ROC), from where the operation of the vessel and the submarines it deploys will be controlled.

Over the next few weeks, the USV will complete its construction process and then set off for Haugesund.
